Example of leave plans: Sharing multiple blocks of leave

Background

A mother and her partner want to have equal time as primary carer for their child. The mother ends their Maternity Leave after 3 months to create 9 months of Shared Parental Leave.

The couple spend the first 3 months at home together, leaving 6 months of Shared Parental Leave for them to split between them. They alternate being at home with the child every 6 weeks for the remaining 6 months of Shared Parental Leave.

Leave plan

Mother’s leave and pay
13 weeks of Maternity Leave and Statutory Maternity Pay, two 6-week blocks of shared parental leave and pay.
Partner’s leave and pay
2 weeks of Paternity Leave and Statutory Paternity Pay. An initial 15-week block of Shared Parental Leave and 14 weeks of Statutory Shared Parental Pay, followed by two 6-week blocks of unpaid Shared Parental Leave.
